It’s that time again peeps! Time for me to ramble on about the best things I’ve tried this month. The next few posts might be a little later than normal because ya girl is in the process of moving. I’ll be kind of all over the place this summer (moving back in with my parents for a few months…womp womp!). If you’re in Oklahoma or Atlanta, hit me up! I’m also going to Hawaii this time next week, so if the posts are kinda crazy and sporadic, that is why!

Let’s get to it!

  1. Jack Black Double-Duty Face Moisturizer SPF 20

I’m not a huge product lady. I try to keep my skin care/hair routine very minimalistic mostly because I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. But recently I’ve started to notice a lot of little wrinkles on my face and although I’m only 25, I haven’t taken such great care of my skin in the past few years. Or my whole life. I went years with crazy sun exposure and absolutely zero sunscreen. So yes, I’m at the point in my life where I realize how important it is to take care of your skin. Not just for cosmetic reason. I wanted to find kind of an easy, one stop shop moisturizer for day time and I found one that I really like! My sister actually introduced me to Jack Black products because we were buying some for her boyfriend for Christmas and you guys know me, I’m a sucker for anything easy that smells good.  This moisturizer is both of those things. I just slather some on my face in the morning and I’m good to go. I wanted something that didn’t feel heavy either and one that didn’t just sit on my face, I need it to soak in. This moisturizer passes all my tests. It is super light and has SPF. It smells kinda manly, but you won’t smell like a lumberjack. It is a male gendered product, but as you guys know, I don’t give any fucks about that.It also gives you an air of fanciness (blue algae and sea parsley….WTF). Jack Black also makes a bunch of other products (beard lube…AGAIN WTF). I got mine on Amazon, it comes in a few different sizes. It’s a little pricey, but a little goes a long way!

And no, this wasn’t created by my idol Jack Black unfortunately 😦

  2. Active Wow Activated Coconut Charcoal Powder

I tried some products this month, aren’t you proud of me?! I’m basically a beauty guru now. I watched a BuzzFeed video where they tried this and bought some on a whim. I’ve been looking for a natural teeth whitening product that doesn’t make your teeth sensitive for a looooooooooong time now. My teeth aren’t very white, I drink way too much tea for that. I promise this stuff isn’t gross. It makes your teeth look disgusting while you use it, but after only one use you can tell they are whiter. Pros are that it is easy to use, I just wet my toothbrush and dip it in the container. Then you just brush normally. I usually brush my teeth with toothpaste beforehand. You’ll want to do a good swish of water when you’re finished just to get any last grittiness out. It really isn’t unpleasant though, I totally thought it would be. It tastes like nothing. Cons are that you basically have to designate a toothbrush to use for this because it turns it black. Also it is really messy. Just opening the container spills it and then it is everywhere. I brush with it once a week and I can tell the difference pretty much every time I brush. I just need to lay off the tea 🙂 I got mine on Amazon. It comes in a few different flavors, but I just chose the original.

  3. Music: Little Mess EP – Grouplove and After Laughter – Paramore

Wow wow wow wow! Lots of good music this month! You guys know how much I love the band Grouplove and if you don’t SHAME ON YOU. They released some tracks that didn’t make their most recent album (Big Mess) on an EP called Little Mess this month and I’m in love. Total heart eyes for deez guys. There are only a few tracks, but it is pure gold just like Big Mess was. It is wherever music is sold/listened to/downloadable, go give it a listen!

Favorite tracks: Adios Amigos, Enlighten Me (Live), and MRI

I never thought I would say I love Paramore again. I was a pretty hardcore fan in my middle school years when pop punk was large and in charge. I was emo scene-core guys. Just kidding, I just wished I was. But I loved Paramore. I remember sneaking into Hot Topic to buy some of their merch because my mom hated Hot Topic and wouldn’t let me go in when I was younger. Their new album After Laugher brings me back to nostalgic middle school Paramore. Everything you used to love about Paramore is still alive and well. Hayley Williams (lead singer and badass) is as genius as ever on this album. If you want upbeat songs about hard shit (depression, loss, disappointment) look no further. It is also wherever music is sold/listened to/downloadable. Check it out.

Favorite tracks: Caught in the Middle, Hard Times, Told You So, and Tell Me How

  4. theSkimm

DUDES. theSkimm is amazing. I love staying up to date on news stuff, but I really hate wading through articles and clips and shit. I like all of my news in one spot, condensed in a liberal/feminist/POC space. Look no further than the best email newsletter you ever signed up for (besides my blog post email alerts of course!). theSkimm sends you a very condensed, witty version of the previous days news stories/important shit going on. I read it every morning and there are always little jokes/funnies hidden in there. I love itttttt! They don’t inundate you with emails either, just the one a day, every week day. It usually has a relevant quote at the top of the email and it sometimes comes with a quick wine/novel/film/music recommendation at the end. It gives you the hard news in a soft way and it is extremely pleasant. It is also a great networking tool, you can become a Skimm’Bassador and get a more hands on experience with other Skimmers in the community. Lots of perks people! I can’t recommend this enough, all you do is go to their webpage (link above) and type in your email address. DO IT!

  5. Mommy Dead and Dearest (HBO) and There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane (HBO)

Both true crime documentaries. Both on HBO. Without giving away too much, both of these documentaries will have you saying what the actual fuck throughout. Some really messed up stuff really slides under the radar. Mommy Dead and Dearest is the documentary about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a girl who allegedly killed her mother as a result of suffering through Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. It is an enthralling true story and it is intensely messed up. There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane is the story of a mother who was coming home from a camping trip with a mini van full of children and drove straight into on-coming traffic. It is the investigation into how that happened and what possibly happened to her to cause her to do that. Both are fantastic and will have you truly on the edge of your seat.

  6. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) and Master of None Season 2 (Netflix)

I know everyone has been captivated by The Handmaid’s Tale series on Hulu. I read the book back when I was in high school and it seemed so real to me even then. The series started out really strong, but it has waned a little in my opinion. The first three episodes had me feeling sick to my stomach and it has progressively gotten less intense and less interesting to me. Not because I’m an insensitive person, but it just doesn’t seem to have kept the momentum it started with. It has become kind of predictable, but I am continuing to watch it. I’m not sure if I will watch Season 2 (it has already been picked up for a second season). It is worth a watch, especially if you didn’t read the book. It is an ominous peek inside our eventual future at the rate we’re going. Master of None Season 1 was great, but a tad underwhelming to me. I love Aziz Ansari and the world he created, presumably tailored after his own life, had me feeling like one of the gang. And Season 2 only strengthens that. I wanted more. The cinematography and stylistic choices were more than I expected, yet everything I wanted. I felt so fulfilled after watching it all in one day. The episodes are short OKAY. If you didn’t watch Season 1, binge all the way through Season 2. You won’t be disappointed.

  7. Dollar Shave Club

I gave in. After months and months of seeing this service advertised on my instagram, I decided to give it a try. I’ve always been kind of appalled at how expensive quality razors are. Shaving stuff in general is expensive, no matter how it is gendered. I have used Venus razors practically since I started shaving and have been happy with them, I rarely cut myself. But the blade refills are so expensive. A four pack is nearly $30. It’s a lot. So when I found that each month, a service could send me 4 razor blades AND a new razor handle at the same quality, I was excited. But of course skeptical because what is this sorcery. I also knew I wouldn’t need to get new ones every month because I’m not a bear. My hair grows fast, but not that fast, so even cheaper. Dollar Shave Club has a couple different options, all of which can be found on their website (link above). I got the most expensive box, which is 4 razor blades (6 blades) and a razor handle all for $9. NINE DOLLARS. The razor handle is super sturdy and has some weight to it, similar to a typical Gillette men’s razor. Very nice quality. The razor blades are SHARP. I actually cut myself a little bit the first time using it on my legs, make sure you’re all lubed up! My box also came with a trial of Shave Butter, which was awesome and something else they sell on their website. I usually just use soap and that works for me! I would definitely try them out if you are looking for good quality products, fast shipping, and cost effective items. They will notify you before they ship the next box out (at the end of the month), and you can choose to skip or for them to ship. That way you only get what you need, when you need it. AWESOMESAUCE!

Well there you have it folks! I hope there’s something on here that you might want to try out yourself, all the links are in the article. Keep an eye out for my next few posts, they’ll be a bit off schedule, but I’ll still be posting 🙂
